Another jaw-dropping example of how broken our border and justice systems have become: A New Mexico magistrate judge has resigned after a Venezuelan national โ suspected of being part of the violent Tren de Aragua gang โ was arrested at a home the judge owned. The man, Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, had been living in a casita behind the judgeโs house and was caught with firearms while in the country illegally.
The arrest happened back in February, but the story is only now exploding as more facts come out. Ortega-Lopez had entered the United States illegally in December 2023. By February 2025, he was arrested by Homeland Security agents in Las Cruces, New Mexico โ at a residence owned by Judge Jose โJoelโ Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano. Just days later, Judge Cano abruptly resigned.
Let that sink in: a sitting American judge, a former police officer no less, had a suspected member of a foreign criminal gang living on his property โ and only quit once it went public.
โIf this doesnโt sound the alarm on the dangers of open borders, nothing will.โ
Tren de Aragua: A Foreign Gang Growing on U.S. Soil
Ortega-Lopez is believed to be connected to Tren de Aragua, or TdA โ a hyper-violent gang thatโs spread from Venezuela across Latin America and now into the United States. Known for drug trafficking, kidnapping, extortion, and human smuggling, TdA is exactly the kind of criminal element President Trump has warned about for years.
Yet somehow, Ortega-Lopez managed to not only cross our border illegally, but settle into a cozy spot behind a judgeโs home. He posted videos online holding guns, dressed in body armor, and hanging out in Las Cruces like he owned the place. And this wasnโt a flophouse โ this was a casita on a judgeโs property.
According to reports, Nancy Cano met Ortega-Lopez while he was working as a handyman. He was then offered a place to stay in the back unit. But that simple act of โhelping someoneโ ended with a federal raid and a loaded illegal immigrant in handcuffs.
The Big Question: What Did the Judge Know?
This isnโt just about one arrest. This is about how deep the rot goes. Judge Cano resigned on March 3, just days after the arrest. No public explanation. No apology. Just a quiet exit. The Department of Justice has confirmed that investigators are now reviewing his recent cases.

Why did this judge โ a man with law enforcement experience โ not raise any red flags about a man posting gun pics on social media? Why was he offering housing to someone in the country illegally? And most importantly: what other cases might have been influenced by these shady ties?
If this is what weโre seeing above the surface, whatโs hiding underneath?
โIf a judge can look the other way while a gang member lives on his property, how can we trust anything about our court system?โ
This Is What Happens When You Ignore Border Security
Letโs not forget: Cristhian Ortega-Lopez should have never been in this country to begin with. He crossed illegally in December 2023 โ right in the middle of the Biden-era chaos. Trumpโs return to office in January 2025 came just weeks too late to stop it.

President Trump has made it clear that his second term is about cleaning house โ and that includes the courts. Rogue judges. Soft-on-crime DAs. Politicians and officials turning a blind eye to foreign threats. Itโs all coming to light now.
Ortega-Lopez is currently being held without bond. Heโs charged with illegal possession of firearms as a non-citizen. The DOJ is continuing its investigation into possible gang links and how he ended up embedded in a residential area without raising alarms.
Time to Take Back Our Country
This case is a perfect snapshot of what Trump supporters have been warning about for years. Weak border policies lead to violent criminals sneaking into American communities. And too many people in positions of power โ even judges โ are either blind to it or complicit in letting it happen.

Under President Trump, that era is over. His administration has already increased border surveillance, ramped up ICE arrests, and is pushing Congress to classify TdA and MS-13 as transnational terror threats. These arenโt just gangs โ theyโre foreign militias operating on U.S. soil. And we finally have a president whoโs doing something about it.
